Thanks to all those who joined us at the Charlotte Knights Game this past Friday evening. Despite the scattered showers it was a great way to kick off the semester for both faculty and students alike.

If you missed it, make sure to join us at our next Graduate event!

Southern States Communication Association

Janice Hocker Rushing Early Career Researcher Award

Dr. Grano & Dr. Stokes have been named to receive the Southern States Communication Association’s Janice Hocker Rushing Early Career Researcher Award at the April 2009 convention.  The Rushing Award is given to a scholar who has demonstrated exceptional scholarly ability through research and publication early in their academic career (i.e., untenured Assistant Professor).

The award is generally given to one scholar each year, although in some years the committee decides to name co-recipients, as it did this year. This is the same award that Cris Davis received last year, which means that we have had three faculty members now that have received the award.  The Rushing Award was established in 1995, and only one other institution (University of Georgia, 2 awardees) has had multiple faculty members receive the award.

Global Public Relations: Spanning Borders, Spanning Cultures

Dr. Freitag & Dr. Stokes recently published a new book establishing common definitions and standards pertaining to public relations practice in international settings.

As a comparative benchmark, it describes the emergence and evolution of the profession in the U.S. and its rapid spread, with

permutations, elsewhere in the world, and the trends and factors that continue to shape the disciple. Written in a straightforward but lively style, the book is easily accessible for scholar and practitioner, including non-native English speaker.

Carr joining PRSA College of Fellows
UNCC grad honored for years of expertise and leadership in public relations

Nora Carr, chief communications officer of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, is one of 19 new members who was inducted into the Public Relations Society of America College of Fellows at the society’s international conference in Detroit Oct. 25.

The College of Fellows, with 455 members, represents senior leaders in the public relations profession. Election to the college is a professional honor based on lifetime achievement; fewer than two percent of PRSA’s 32,000 members worldwide have been selected for membership.

Carr is one of only two school public relations professionals selected for induction in the college’s history. Carr, who holds APR certification, has been chief communications officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since 2005.

She has won more than 90 local, state and national awards for excellence, including the 2007 Infinity Award from the Charlotte chapter of PRSA. Previously, Carr was senior vice president and director of Luquire George Andrews, a leading marketing firm based in Charlotte. She has also worked as director of marketing and development for the Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis and as public relations director for the Network for Educational Development and the Normandy School District, also in St. Louis, and as a public relations specialist for hospitals in Missouri.

She is a graduate of Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, and holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Carolinas Communication Association

Columbia, SC     Oct 3-4

We had a very strong presence at the meeting and the our graduate  students did a fantastic job recruiting, engaging, and participating at this conference.

Mary Beth gave an outstanding presentation as a finalist in the Jarrad Top Graduate Paper Award competition! Her presentation was excellent.

Danielle's presentation was also terrific and informative.

Both students should be very proud of their efforts and when you get a chance, please congratulate them on a job well done.
