David Landrum Receives 2014 NC Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service

Communication Studies own, David Landrum has won the 2014 North Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service.  This is the highest honor a State employee may receive.  David will be honored during the Excellence in State Government Week this year.  This is a significant honor for David, the Communication Studies department, CLAS and UNC Charlotte.  The Governor's Awards for Excellence Program is designed to acknowledge and express appreciation for outstanding accomplishments that do not fall entirely within the scope of normal duties, but are in the nature of a major contribution reflecting credit on the person and State service.  The meritorious service or accomplishment is so singularly outstanding that special recognition is justified.

Dr. Leeman and Dr. Grano Host Southern Colloquium on Rhetoric Meeting

Communication Studies Week: Spring Colloquium with Dr. Stacy Holman Jones

Always Strange and Strangely Familiar: Changing Our Words and Worlds Using the Power of Theory and Storytelling

The Communication Studie Graduate Student Association (CSGSA) and the Communication Studies Graduate Department of UNC-Charlotte are proud to announce Dr. Stacy Holman Jones as this year’s colloquium speaker. Dr. Holman Jones will discuss the integration of theory and personal storytelling in scholarship with a focus on the integration of queer theory and queer storytelling as a demonstration of that work.

The Colloquium Presentation will be held on the UNC-C campus at theSAC (Student Activity Center): SALONS A & B on APRIL 21, 2014 from 10:00am–12:00pm, followed by light refreshments in the outside lobby.

The Roundtable Discussion will be held in COLVARD 5090 on APRIL 21, 2014 from 6:00pm–8:00pm. Attendees should bring an autoethnographic paper they are working on or have written, or  a published autoethnographic paper that interests them. Attendees should also bring a few excerpts from texts as a sample of a particular theoretical work that interests them. A PDF copy of the introduction to Dr. Holman Jones book, The Handbook of Autoethnography, will be available for attendees. Please email CSGSA officers Meghan Snider or Rachael Thomas to receive access to the PDF.

Dinner with Dr. Holman Jones will be held at CIROS RESTAURANT on APRIL 21, 2014 from 8:30pm–10:00pm. Please RSVP to Meghan Snider or Rachael Thomas by April 15 so we can make reservations.

Celia Karp Named Fulbright Receipient
April 7, 2014

Celia Karp, a communication studies student, has received a highly competitive and prestigious Fulbright award.  Celia received UNC Charlotte’s first Fulbright Study/Research grant since 1991.  Celia will spend her Fulbright year in Ecuador working on her project “Communication, Culture, and Health: Investigating Maternal Mortality in Ecuador.”  Celia is also one of the inaugural Levine Scholars. 

UNC charlotte has had an institutionally unprecedented three Fulbright recipients for 2014.  According to the Office of International Programs, this nearly equals the four UNC Charlotte had produced from 1987-2012.
